Two women killed Monday night when their vehicle got washed away during severe flooding in Plainfield have been identified.

Lubia Estevez and Forest Whitlock were traveling along Stelle Avenue at about 8 p.m. when their vehicle made a turn, ended up in a ditch and was pulled into the fast-moving waters of Cedar Brook under the bridge, according to a city spokeswoman.

Both were Plainfield residents in their early 60s, though their exact ages were not available.

A lifelong city resident, Estevez had worked for the Plainfield school district’s food service department for the past 15 years, according to a GoFundme.com established to cover her funeral expenses. Estevez’s husband died of an illness several months ago and she has no remaining family, the fundraiser said.

There were no other known storm-related fatalities in New Jersey on Monday, though police and firefighters made dozens of rescues in Plainfield, North Plainfield, South Plainfield, Warren, Watchung and Middlesex Borough.

Flash flood warnings were in effect at the time of the storms.

The deaths are the third and fourth due to severe storms in the city this month.

Two men were killed in Plainfield on July 3 when their car was hit by a fallen tree on Myrtle Avenue.

“All of Plainfield grieves this latest loss,” Mayor Adrian Mapp said Tuesday. “To lose four residents in a short span of time is unimaginable. We mourn with the families and remain committed to doing all we can to strengthen our emergency response systems and protect our residents from future harm.”

Cleanup of storm-related damage is ongoing in Plainfield and other locations Wednesday, officials said.

Scattered storms are possible again this evening.
