4 Years After HBO’s Best Small Town Crime Drama Ended, a Potential Season 2 Is Finally Being Addressed

It has become a common feat for miniseries to be released, telling stories which are slightly too large for a feature film and too short for a full blown multi-season series. Over the past decade or so, a number of these shows which one could arguably call masterpieces, have premiered. One of them is HBO’s crime series, Mare of Easttown. The miniseries premiered in April 2021 to critical reception holding an impressive critic score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. It is not surprising that there has been somewhat of a clamor for a second season since then. However, one of the stars of the show, that served arguably as a replacement for True Detective, has offered a disappointing update regarding a potential second season.

Over the course of its run, Julianne Nicholson played Lori Ross, the childhood bestfriend of the series protagonist, Mare. Since her time on Mare of Easttown, Nicholson has been involved in other projects including the Hulu political thriller series, Paradise. Mare of Easttown was created by Brad Ingelsby, and while speaking in a new interview, Nicholson was quizzed on the future of the series. In response, the actress does not directly address if there will be another season, casting uncertain over that possibility. However, she does praise her time on the show and a role which earned her an Emmy in 2021. “Yeah, I do,” Nicholson responds when quizzed about contact with the miniseries’ creator. “Brad, bless Brad. I love him so much. And yeah, we check in with each other every now and again.” On the question of more of Mare of Easttown, Nicholson answers:

“Who knows? I think he’s a huge talent, such a nice guy, huge talent. And obviously that show was a hugely amazing one to film and yeah, I loved being a part of that show.”

What Is ‘Mare of Easttown’ About?

The series follows Marianne “Mare” Sheehan ([played by Kate Winslet), a renowned local figure in Easttown, mainly due to winning a high school basketball game well over two decades prior. A skilled and devoted police detective, her status in that regard has come into question recently, as the case of a missing girl has gone unsolved for a year. Mare lost her son to suicide, and she’s since divorced from her husband, Frank (David Denman). Her daughter, Siobhan (Angourie Rice), grows distant, and her mother, Helen (Jean Smart) is always critical. To make things worse, Erin McMenamin (Cailee Spaeny) turns up dead, and she’s no stranger to Mare’s small circle, causing further strife. Other cast members included Neal Huff as Father Dan, Guy Pearce as Richard, Evan Peters as Detective Colin and many more.

There has been chatter in the years since the miniseries premiered and the enthusiasm is shared by the higher ups at HBO. Speaking in 2024, HBO’s head of drama Francesca Orsi revealed that another season was actually being discussed saying, “We are having early discussions about whether it might be time to start thinking of building something. We might be willing to figure out with Mare, years later, picking her up — not on the heels of where she ended, but there have been years for the character that have passed. Who is she now?”
