Two-time PGA Championship winner Vijay Singh has withdrawn from this year’s tournament and instead will compete in the Regions Tradition against John Daly
Vijay Singh has withdrawn from the PGA Championship just days before the prestigious event is slated to kick off.
Singh will not tee off at Quail Hollow Club next weekend, with Michael Thorbjornsen taking his spot. The former world No. 1 was initially listed in the field for the second major of the year, which comes just over one month after he was forced to pull out of The Masters.
Back in March, Singh was not in attendance at Augusta National for the first time since making his Masters debut in 1994. The 62-year-old – who secured the green jacket in 2000 – was unable to compete due to a health setback.

“Due to injury, Vijay Singh has informed the competition committees he will not play in the 2025 Masters Tournament,” Augusta National said at the time.
Taking to social media, Singh expressed his disappointment ahead of The Masters. “Saddened to miss @themasters on the 25th anniversary of my win, and after 31 consecutive years of competing. Sending my best to all of the players competing this week at Augusta,” he wrote on Instagram.
In the weeks since, Singh has competed in two tournaments on the PGA Tour Champions – even placing fifth in the Mitsubishi Electric Classic on April 27.
Though Singh appears to be back to full strength, he seemingly would rather continue playing on the Champions tour – more specifically the Regions Tradition – rather than test his luck in the PGA Championship, which he won in 1998 and 2004.
Following a T65 finish in the Insperity Invitational earlier this month, he wrote: “Rough start but found some momentum yesterday to finish the week strong @insperityinvitational. Looking forward to @regionstradition next.”
Singh is far from the only big name that will be at the Regions Tradition, which is slated to take place at the same time as the PGA Championship. John Daly will additionally be traveling down to the Greystone Founders Course for the tournament.
“I can go there [PGA] and miss the cut and get $6,000,” he told AP’s Doug Ferguson. “But I’m playing Birmingham. I love Regions. They’re a great sponsor.”
Upon making his highly-anticipated return from hand surgery at the Hoag Classic in March, Daly conceded that he was still not playing at 100% health. “It’s good to be back. It’s been a little brutal, but the hand’s about 80 percent,” he said.
“So figured I’d come here. I love playing in the Hoag Classic. Every year, the guys are so great. So we’ll see what happens.”
Daly pulled back the curtain on what really happened with his hand, adding: “The tendons were all wrapped around each other. [The doctor] doesn’t understand how I played last year.
“But he put it back, attached it to the forefinger or something. 16 surgeries in four years, I’ve lost count pretty much.”
