Boston University defenseman Cole Hutson won the Tim Taylor Award on Friday night as college hockey’s National Rookie of the Year, the night before his Terriers play Western Michigan for the national championship.

Playing alongside his brother, forward Quinn Hutson, and in the position vacated by brother (and likely NHL rookie of the year) Lane Hutson, Cole Hutson leads all college defensemen with 1.24 points per game this season, and is second with 47 points via 14 goals and 33 assists.

He was voted Most Outstanding Player in the Toledo, Ohio, NCAA regional, with two goals and four assists as BU beat Ohio State and Cornell to reach its third straight Frozen Four. He added the primary assist on the game-winning goal Thursday against Penn State, feeding Cole Eiserman on a 2-on-1 in the second period.

In addition to Hockey East Rookie of the Year, Hutson was MVP of the Beanpot, with two goals in a semifinal win over Harvard and the game-winner against BC in the championship.

Hutson is the sixth BU winner of the award, which began in 2007 and is voted on by the nation’s assistant coaches. He joins Kieran Millan (2009), Jack Eichel (2015), Clayton Keller (2017), Joel Farabee (2019), and Macklin Celebrini (2024). Michigan (with three) is the only other school with multiple winners.
