Carteret County officials are monitoring Major Hurricane Erin, a Category 4 Hurricane, as it moves across the Atlantic Ocean. Hurricane Erin is expected to remain offshore, but residents in the Bogue Banks, in Down East communities, and near waterways should be aware that coastal flooding, strong winds, and high surf could occur from Tuesday evening through Thursday, according to a Carteret County Representative.

The National Weather Service office in Newport/Morehead City reports that coastal flooding could start with the high tide on Tuesday evening. A Coastal Flood Watch is in effect for West Carteret, with significant impacts possible to the beach and coastal areas, including persistent rip currents, dangerous surf, and beach erosion. A Carteret County Representative says that Beachgoers should follow the beach warning flag system; a Red Flag indicates high hazard conditions, and swimming is not recommended.

Wind gusts between 30 and 44 mph are forecast starting on Wednesday and peaking on Thursday, especially along the coast near Cedar Island. Wind-driven water may push into the Pamlico Sound, causing flooding that could affect roads during high tide. No mandatory evacuation orders are in effect, but residents in flood-prone areas are encouraged to review their plans and be ready to move if necessary.

Carteret County officials urge residents to review hurricane plans, make sure emergency kits are stocked, secure important documents and outdoor items, include pets in planning, prepare for potential power outages, and check on neighbors who may need assistance.
