Cleveland, OH-The Cleveland State softball team was on the wrong end of two tough losses to Robert Morris on Sunday at Viking Field. In a series pitting the top two teams in the Horizon League, RMU took both games to win the series after Cleveland State won in extra innings in yesterday’s series opener. The Colonials improve to 16-7 in league play and 26-15 overall. Cleveland State drops to 16-5 in league play but remains in first place in the league standings. This is the first time the Vikings have dropped a league series this season, having won the first six to start the league schedule.
Â
RMU took the opener 4-1 thanks to three early runs in the top of the first inning. An RBI single and two bases loaded walks gave the Colonials an early 3-0 lead. The Vikings scored a run in the home half on an Emma Gilkerson double which plated Delaney Ellis to trail 3-1 after one full inning.
Â
Cleveland State struggled to get anything going offensively the rest of the way as RMU starter Madison DeVault held the Vikings to one hit the rest of the game as the Colonials took the first game of the day. Melissa Holzopfel suffered just her second loss in conference play going the distance and allowing four earned runs on 12 hits.
Â
In game two RMU once again took control early scoring two runs in the first and three in the third to lead 5-0. Cleveland State scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings but the rally came up short as RMU struck for six runs in its final two at bats to end the game early due to the run rule with an 11-3 final score.
Â
Katie McDonald started for the Vikings and took the loss giving up three earned runs in two and two-thirds innings. Avery Robinson came on in relief and pitched the final three and one-third innings.
Â
Cleveland State will travel to Oakland for its final three games of the 2025 regular season starting on Friday afternoon. The first game of the series will be at 3:00 p.m. with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday starting at noon. The Vikings have already clinched a spot in the Horizon League Tournament scheduled for May 7-10.
