Rich Hill will return to MLB.
The ageless pitcher is expected to be called up by the Kansas City Royals and could pitch as soon as Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs, FanSided’s Robert Murray reported.
Hill signed a minor league contract with the Royals in May. In nine games for Triple-A Omaha, the 45-year-old amassed a 5.36 ERA with 48 strikeouts.
The left-hander will be the oldest active player in MLB.
Hill had four separate stints with his hometown Boston Red Sox, including in 2024. Hill made four appearances before he was designated for assignment in September.
He expressed no desire to retire after the 2024 season and told MLB Network he planned to play in 2025. While he didn’t sign with anyone during the offseason, he kept his arm sharp while pitching for Team USA in the WBSC Premier 12 tournament. In 10⅓ innings, Hill allowed five hits, two walks but didn’t give up an earned run and struck out 14 batters.
In 20 seasons Hill is 90-74 with a 4.01 ERA, 1.259 WHIP and 1,428 strikeouts. With the Red Sox he went 12-9 with a 3.34 ERA between 30 starts and 44 relief appearances.
It’s unclear if the Royals will use Hill as a starter or out of the bullpen.
