One of the heroes of Georgia’s Rose Bowl win over Oklahoma is saying goodbye to the game of football. Former Georgia outside linebacker Lorenzo Carter has told the Tennessee Titans that he intends to retire per a report from Parker Kelley of 102.5 The Game out of Nashville.
Carter spent seven seasons in the NFL. The first four were with the New York Giants and the final three were spent with the hometown team in Atlanta. He appeared in 96 games during that time with 62 starts. He piled up 278 total tackles with 21.5 sacks, and 35 tackles for loss during his career. He also had an interception, 58 hits on the quarterback, five forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries.
The Giants took Carter in the third round of the 2018 draft. That was after four seasons at Georgia. Carter’s signature play as a Bulldog was a blocked field goal against Oklahoma in the second overtime. Sony Michel ripped off a 25-yard touchdown on the very next play to send UGA to the 2017 National Championship game in Atlanta.
That was in Kirby Smart’s second season as head coach. Carter was one of four players who, after Smart’s first year, made it known that they were coming back to help lead the team to bigger and better things. Michel was also in that group along with Nick Chubb and Sony Michel.
Carter’s Georgia career saw him appear in 54 games. He piled up 165 total tackles, 14.5 sacks, and 21 tackles for loss during that time. He also recovered six fumbles in a Georgia uniform.
He signed with the Bulldogs out of Norcross High School in 2014. He was a five-star prospect and according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that includes all three sites that publish recruiting rankings, he ranked as the nation’s No. 17 overall player. Carter was also the No. 2 EDGE in America and the No. 2 player in Georgia.
