Henry Cavill Confirms ‘Highlander’ Reboot Is Finally Happening

Action fans have been waiting for what feels like forever for the Highlander reboot to get off the ground. Now, things are finally moving forward, with former Superman actor Henry Cavill now confirming that, not only is the fantasy reboot his next project, but it’s all set to start production very soon.

After flailing around in development hell for what seems like an eternity and having previously cast Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds in the lead, the Highlander reboot is finally happening. Of course, there can be only one, and that one is Henry Cavill, who will take the lead as the titular immortal warrior in Amazon’s reboot.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter recently, Cavill was asked about his “big summer plans,” with the Man of Steel star revealing that the only thing on his docket is Highlander. And he couldn’t be more excited to lead the project under the director of John Wick’s Chad Stahelski at last.

“Highlander! That is taking all of my focus. It’s a project that I’m extremely excited about. This character is going to be a lot of fun to play, and I’m loving working with Chad Stahelski. He is a very talented man.”

The Highlander reboot is expected to follow a similar plot to the 1986 original, which follows swordsman Connor MacLeod as he discovers that he is one of a number of immortal warriors who can be killed only by beheading. After living somewhat peacefully for several centuries, MacLeod settles in New York City and is soon dragged back onto the battlefield when his greatest enemy returns to kill him and thus obtain “the Prize.” The reboot, however, will make a few changes, with Stahelski having previously revealed that the story will transform Cavill’s immortal into 500-year-old expert martial artist.

Stahelski has been signed on to direct the Highlander reboot for almost a decade now, and while there have been more false starts than we care to count, the filmmaker is now all set to reveal his take on the beloved fantasy action franchise. Speaking exclusively with MovieWeb’s own George Edelman, Stahelski has confirmed that the Highlander reboot is his next project.

“But I am focused on the John Wick world, and I’m trying to infuse things I love into the right fit. But the real growth happens afterwards, when you have time to reflect on all the sh*tty mistakes you made and all the things that I could have done better, and then you get the new influence of the filter effect of life. Like, just going to New York for a week and scouting there [for Highlander]…I’m doing Highlander next. So now I’m in that kind of mode.”

Alongside Henry Cavill, the Highlander reboot will now mark a Man of Steel reunion, with Russell Crowe (who played Jor-El to Cavill’s Kal-El in the Snyderverse) joining the fray. While his role has not yet been confirmed, it’s expected that Crowe will take over from original Highlander star Sean Connery as MacLeod’s mentor, Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez.
