House of the Dragon season 3 set photos suggest more book deviations for Matt Smith’s Daemon Targaryen despite season 2’s criticisms. The HBO prequel series is based on Fire & Blood, a companion book to George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice & Fire novels. House of the Dragon season 3 is currently filming for a hopeful 2026 release date.
Unofficial set videos were shared on an X fan page that seem to show Matt Smith’s Daemon Targaryen interacting with two major new characters, Ormund Hightower (James Norton) and Prince Daeron Targaryen, the youngest son of King Viserys and Alicent Hightower. The photos also reveal Hightower infantry, suggesting a major battle sequence.
Daeron’s casting has yet to be officially revealed, and the set videos themselves should be taken with a grain of salt, as there’s no confirmation as to what is happening in these scenes. That said, these do appear to be the elements in place for this scene, which would suggest source material changes.
What The New House Of The Dragon Set Videos Mean
Daemon Doesn’t Meet With Daeron In The Book
This footage will pique the curiosity of any fans of Fire & Blood, as Daemon doesn’t go to meet his young nephew in the text. In House of the Dragon season 2’s ending, audiences saw Prince Daeron’s dragon, Tessarion, heading toward the conflict with the Hightower army, building up to some pivotal battle sequences.

House of the Dragon Season 3 Confirmed To Include Missing Targaryen & Key Member of Team Green
After two seasons without a key member of the Green faction, House of the Dragon season 3 will officially introduce a missing Targaryen.
With the Hightower forces present in these BTS photos and videos, it would appear that this is in or around the First Battle of Tumbleton, which would be drastically altered by Daemon’s presence. It may be that Daemon arrives in the Reach to meet his nephew, attempting to persuade him to either turn back or swear fealty to Rhaenyra.
Again, without HBO’s confirmation of the Daeron casting or any official indication of what this scene is, it’s difficult to say for sure. However, this would provide Daemon with some fresh activities for the new season, lest he end up hanging around King’s Landing and repeating the season 2 critiques for his character.

HOTD Season 3 Sets Up A Potentially Exciting Reunion
One of the major changes in House of the Dragon season 2’s ending was the reveal that Otto Hightower is being held captive somewhere, which many audiences have assumed is in the Reach at a castle loyal to Rhaenyra; perhaps Honeyholt, the seat of House Beesbury.

Matt Smith Responds To House Of The Dragon Theory That Daemon Is The Three-Eyed Raven
In a recent interview, Daemon Targaryen actor Matt Smith addressed one of the massive, outlandish fan theories about his character’s future.
This would give Daeron an objective early in season 3, allowing him to rescue his grandfather from captivity. This seems like a matter Daemon would be interested in involving himself in, given his personal feud with Otto dating back to season 1.
If this turns out to be true, I’d be excited to see Daemon and Otto together again in House of the Dragon season 3. Their verbal sparring matches made them one of the more compelling dynamics in season 1.
