Texas Tech rattled off 11 runs in the bottom of the third inning to blast Arizona State 18-0 in the semifinals of the Big 12 Conference softball tournament at Devon Park in Oklahoma City on Friday, May 9.
The 18 runs scored are the most in tournament history for a single game. The Red Raiders (44-12) advance to the championship game against the winner of the Arizona-Iowa State semifinal. The game starts at 11 a.m. CT Saturday, May 10, and will air on ESPNU.
NiJaree Canady got the start and struck out five batters in three innings of work before the offensive outburst.
Canady — who also had an RBI double for the first run of the day — improved to 25-5 and is now tied for second place for single-season pitching wins in Texas Tech history.
Mihyia Davis got the bottom of the third going with a solo home run on the first pitch. That began an 11-run frame that included two-run singles from Lauren Allred and Raegan Jennings.
Hailey Toney (four RBI), Demi Elder, Davis and Jennings each had three hits, with Allred and Alana Johnson adding two hits each. Johnson and Davis drove in three runs apiece.
Texas Tech added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth after its third-inning scoring barrage.
The Red Raiders will compete in their first Big 12 tournament championship game since 2007, looking to bring home the first tourney title in program history.
