Here’s how high-school athletes are chosen for The Providence Journal All-State awards
The Providence Journal has been selecting high school All-State teams for more than 80 years. Here’s what goes into our calculation.
Journal Staff
The Providence Journal is proud to announce the 2025 All-State Softball first and second teams. The Journal Sports staff, with some help from the coaches associations, determines the first- and second-team members. All first-team members were nominees for Player of the Year in that sport, and winners were announced at the All-State Awards show held June 18 at the Providence Performing Arts Center, featuring Rhode Island FC midfielder Clay Holstad.
FIRST TEAM
Adriana Jeannenot
Chariho, sophomore, pitcher
There was no sophomore slump for Jeannenot, who earned first-team honors as a freshman and became Rhode Island’s best pitcher this spring. Jeannenot went 16-3 this season, throwing 123⅔ innings with 201 strikeouts, finishing with a 2.21 ERA to help the Chargers reach the state title game. A standout at the plate (she batted .485), Jeannenot will enter her junior year as the state’s top two-way player.
Izzy Sousa
St. Raphael, sophomore, pitcher
A transfer who helped Cranston East win the Division III title in 2024, Sousa had little trouble adjusting to D-II this season and pitched the Saints to a championship. With added strength and velocity, Sousa dominated D-II and finished 12-0 with a 1.00 ERA and 186 strikeouts in 98 innings. Sousa also led the Saints with a .404 batting average, had five home runs and will be a wonder to watch in 2026.
Hailey Vigneau
La Salle, junior, pitcher
It’s a repeat first-team selection and third overall All-State team for Vigneau, who has done nothing but dazzle since her career started. The junior, who has verbally committed to play at Marist College, went 20-1 this spring for the state champs, striking out 157 batters in 119 innings with a 1.35 ERA and a .915 WHIP. Vigneau will be back for one more season as she tries to lead La Salle to a four-peat.
Brooke Fairbanks
East Greenwich, senior, catcher
A key piece to the Avengers’ 2023 Division II title team and the squad that made a run in D-I last spring, Fairbanks kept the young East Greenwich team together with her leadership skills and bat this spring. Fairbanks, a second-team All-State selection as a sophomore, was otherworldly at the plate, batting .600 with 23 runs and 23 RBI. Her playing career will continue at the University of Rhode Island.
Lily Roumelis
La Salle, senior, first base
Armed with one of the sweetest swings in softball, Roumelis put together the best season of her career and closed with a bang in her final two games. Roumelis hit .385 this spring with 10 home runs, 34 RBI and 30 runs scored. Her best swings happened in the biggest games, hitting a walk-off grand slam in the winners’-bracket final and a homer in the state title game. Roumelis will play next spring at Marist University.
Maia Salvo
Ponaganset, senior, second base
Perhaps the state’s most underrated player, Salvo wasted little time adjusting to Division I pitching. A repeat first-team selection, Salvo was the state’s best left-handed hitter and showed up big in every game. She finished her season batting .582 with 12 home runs, 30 RBI and 25 runs scored. Salvo will play next spring at Marist College.
Phoenyx Silva
La Salle, senior, third base
What can you say that hasn’t been said about the best hitter Rhode Island’s ever seen? Silva’s final season for the Rams was her finest, batting .550 with 21 home runs, 39 RBI and 49 runs scored. The two-time Providence Journal Player of the Year and two-time Gatorade Player of the Year closed her career hitting .538 with 54 home runs, 150 runs and 143 RBI. She’ll play next spring at the University of Iowa. Silva is The Providence Journal Softball Player of the Year.
Addison Poole
Westerly, freshman, shortstop
Once Poole found her footing, it was over for Division I pitching as she stamped her name as the state’s next big star. Poole went on a tear in her freshman campaign and led the Bulldogs with a .473 batting average, 37 RBI and 34 runs while hitting 10 home runs. What comes next should be fun to watch, unless you’re an opponent.
Nevaeh Fatorma
Cranston East, senior, outfield
The state’s most electric offensive weapon continued to befuddle Division III pitching and had the Thunderbolts on the cusp of repeating as champions. Fatorma, a slap hitter with track speed, batted .508 this spring while scoring 43 runs, driving in 23 and stealing 14 bases. One of the best defensive outfielders in the state, her playing career will continue at Division II Assumption University.
Skylar Hawes
Pilgrim, sophomore, outfield
Hawes was terrific as a freshman but even better in her sophomore campaign, bringing a glove and bat that had the Patriots near the top of the standings all spring. Hitting third in the order, Hawes produced, batting .313 with 21 RBI and 21 runs and she hit six home runs this spring. She played great gap-to-gap defense and had an arm to match and will be a player to watch next season.
Siena Nardelli
Cranston West, senior, outfield
The state’s best defensive outfielder, Nardelli made all the plays in the field but also did plenty of hitting in her final season for the Falcons. Nardelli hit .354 this spring and drove in 19, showing off her speed with 28 runs scored and 14 stolen bases. Her defensive prowess was unmatched and she’ll continue her playing career next spring at Division II Assumption University.
Alivia Ring
La Salle, senior, designated player
On a team loaded with talent, Ring’s production and consistency stood out. The senior made her bones with her bat, finishing second for the Rams with a .435 batting average while hitting six home runs with 22 RBI and 18 runs. Primarily an outfielder, Ring also caught when needed and hit in multiple spots in the order with no complaints. She’ll play next spring at Division II Barry University.
