An upcoming Netflix documentary is set to break down the lowlights of Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre’s career.

Untold: The Fall of Favre, is set to be released on the streaming platform on May 20. It seeks to dive into the darker side of the widely-celebrated quarterback’s off-the-field controversies.

On the field, Favre was a lovable American underdog story coming from the University of Southern Mississippi after being selected in the second round of the 1991 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons. Favre spent one year, and appeared in two games, in Atlanta before getting traded to the Green Bay Packers in 1992. Former Falcons coach Jerry Glanville has publicly stated multiple times that he had serious concerns about Favre’s drinking habits. The quarterback also threw two interceptions in his four passing attempts his first season.

“When you’re not playing, it’s easy to drift into trouble,” Glanville said in a 2018 interview with Rich Eisen. “If you’re playing and have the responsibility that your team’s counting on you, then you pay more attention and you do less things [that would get you in trouble].”

At Green Bay, Favre solidified himself as an NFL legend, becoming a three-time MVP and winning the 1997 Super Bowl. He then retired and came back to play for the Minnesota Vikings and New York Jets in the late 2000s. With the Jets, Favre allegedly sent explicit photos to Jenn Sterger, a Jets sideline reporter. The NFL fined the quarterback for his alleged actions. Sterger has reiterated that she’s never actually met Favre.

“Brett Favre ultimately destroyed my life,” Sterger said in the documentary’s trailer. “When someone shows you who they are, believe them.”

She also played one of Favre’s voicemails that he left asking for her to come over in the trailer.

Favre’s troubles peak when he became engulfed in a welfare scandal in Mississippi in the early 20202. In 2017, Favre was pushing to build a new volleyball facility at Southern Miss, where his daughter was an athlete. When looking for more funds, Favre didn’t hesitate to look for funds from Mississippi’s welfare budget. Favre sued media personalities Shannon Sharpe and Pat McAfee for comments they made against him for “stealing from poor people in Mississippi,” as McAfee phrased it. Both cases were dismissed.
