We Tried McDonald’s New Adult Happy Meal and Shake — and It Was So Nostalgic

NEED TO KNOW

  • PEOPLE got an early taste of the new McDonaldland Meal, which launches Aug. 12
  • The meal includes the brand-new Mt. McDonaldland Shake, a “secret concoction” with a raspberry flavor
  • An accompanying collectible tin was filled with playful stickers and postcards featuring the brand’s characters

McDonald’s latest offering is a walk down memory lane for anyone who grew up on Happy Meals.

Earlier this week, the Golden Arches announced the release of its McDonaldland Meal, which comes with a Quarter Pounder with cheese or a 10-piece Chicken McNuggets, fries and the brand-new Mt. McDonaldland Shake.

PEOPLE had an early taste of the new items, which officially land on menus Aug. 12, and got to unbox one of the collectible tins that come with the meal.

The “Welcome to McDonaldland” packaging pays tribute to all the classic characters customers will recognize, such as Ronald McDonald, Grimace, Birdie, Hamburglar and the Fry Friends. Mayor McCheese, a top-hat-wearing political leader and cheeseburger enthusiast last seen in 1983, also returns to join in on the fun.

Grimace was among the characters who attended a McDonald’s event for the meal in N.Y.C.

The food containers are all decorated with whimsical illustrations, and the bag even features a crossword puzzle with McDonaldland trivia.

Each meal comes with a colorful box depicting a map of McDonaldland, which contains a tin of collectibles themed for one of the six characters. We were given the Mayor McCheese tin.

Some of the items in the tin included a postcard bearing an image of “Town Hall,” which is fittingly located in a building resembling a cheeseburger, a sticker that reads “McCheese is my mayor,” and a “passport” issued to the mayor that lists his hobbies as playing cello and tailoring.

The playful souvenir brought back the joy of scoring new Happy Meal toys and celebrating childhood birthdays at the fast food joint.

The Mt. McDonaldland Shake, which the brand says is inspired by the blue lava and pink clouds of the mythical volcano, is billed by the fast food chain as “a secret concoction.”

The blue base of the shake had a distinct raspberry flavor, while the pink whipped cream had a creamy vanilla taste to it.

McDonald’s recently gave customers nostalgia with another popular release. Snack Wraps returned to menus nationwide on July 10 in two flavors: Spicy and Ranch. The item first launched in the U.S. in 2006 and lasted a decade before being discontinued in 2016.
