What to know about the US Open Cup

The U.S. Open Cup, the country’s oldest ongoing national soccer competition, has been dominated by Major League Soccer (MLS) teams since the league’s inception in 1996. In fact, an MLS side has lifted the trophy every year since 2000. The last non-MLS team to win the tournament was the Rochester Rhinos in 1999, while Sacramento Republic FC was the most recent lower-division club to reach the final in 2022.

Los Angeles FC, the defending champions, will not have the opportunity to defend their title this year as they are participating in the Concacaf Champions Cup. That is as a result of the U.S. Soccer Federation announcing changes to the 2025 tournament format, with 16 MLS teams entering the US Open Cup in the fourth round, while other teams will represent the MLS in the Champions Cup, Leagues Cup and Canadian Championship. Half of these teams were given priority hosting, while the other half were designated as away teams for their opening matches.

The 16 MLS sides were selected based on specific criteria, and ranked according to their performance in the 2024 Supporters’ Shield standings. Expansion team San Diego FC did not enter the 2025 edition of the tournament.

NYCFC did not compete in the 2024 edition of the tournament. As a relatively young team in the MLS, founded in 2013, they have never won a US Open Cup, but teams based in New York State have won the most US Open Cups among all states represented, with 26 total titles.

The Riverhounds, however, have reached the Round of 32 for three consecutive tournaments since it resumed following the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, they went as far as the quarterfinal stage, before being eliminated by Cincinnati.
