A Midlands man couldn’t believe it when the scratch-off lottery ticket he bought on his way home from work turned out to be a grand prize winning jackpot, according to South Carolina Education Lottery officials.

The man’s $10 purchase turned into a $500,000 payday, officials said in a news release.

“I was at a loss for words,” he said in the release. “It stuns you.”

The six-figure winning scratch-off ticket was sold at the Irmo Mini Mart gas station/convenience store on Lake Murray Boulevard, according to the release. That’s close to the intersection with St. Andrews Road, near Columbia.

His family was equally surprised when they found out he was spending the prize money on them, officials said. Information about how he was dispensing the newfound windfall on his family was not available.

“It’s been life changing for us,” the winner said.

The winner will be allowed to retain some privacy, as South Carolina is one of 11 states — along with Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Texas and Virginia — that allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.

The man overcame 1,500,000-to-1 odds to win the grand prize in The Big $pin game, according to the release. Two of the game’s four grand prize winning tickets remain unclaimed, officials said.

Irmo Mini Mart received a commission of $5,000 for selling the claimed ticket.
